PAY GRADE:         301   

PAY RANGE:         $26.27 /hour - $35.44 /hour; $54,641.60 - $73,715.20 annualized

JOB TYPE:            Non-exempt, Full-time (40 hours a week), Monday- Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, or as required based upon school schedule and agency needs.

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:  This is a sworn law enforcement officer position whose primary assignment is to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of students, staff, and visitors at the Seven Rivers Christian School Campus. This position works collaboratively with the school administrators, teachers, and parents in maintaining a safe learning environment while building positive relationships between law enforcement and the community.  This position acts as a mentor and role model for students, promoting respect, responsibility, and accountability.  This position will assist school administrators in safety planning, emergency response preparedness, and threat assessments when requested.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safety School Officer will have all the job duties and responsibilities as a deputy sheriff.
  • Must have a strong interest in working with all the youth of Citrus County in an educational atmosphere.
  • Conducts criminal investigations regarding incidents occurring on school campuses and involving students.
  • Actively patrols campus during academic hours of instruction.
  • Effectively collaborates with school administrators in developing, assisting, and coordinating school safety and security plans and drills.
  • Assists the Head of School, Principles, and teachers with counseling students when requested.
  • Possesses an understanding and knowledge of Choices, Know the Law, FOCUS, Child Lures, Jr. FOCUS, or other safety programs.
  • Conducts criminal investigations regarding incidents occurring on school campuses or involving students.
  • Possesses the ability and aptitude to engage in special projects as deemed by Sheriff or designee.
  • Establishes and maintains a customer service-oriented relationship with school personnel, students, and citizens of Citrus County.
  • Assists in creating and planning a variety of programs and support security and training functions.
  • Speaks at community and agency related events.
  • All CCSO employees are considered essential emergency workers and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations, including but not limited to, in-County and out-of-County deployments.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and provide detailed instruction for complex scenarios clearly and confidently to individuals and in front of large groups.
  • Ability and aptitude to engage in special projects assigned by supervision.
  • Ability to create a safe and secure learning environment for students, faculty, and staff at their assigned school campus.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and provide an atmosphere where students feel comfortable in communicating with law enforcement, teachers, and administrators.
  • Exercise safe and sound judgment before, during, and after school events.
  • Ability to review school related incidents and recommend operational and training needs to both law enforcement and school personnel.  

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One or more years as a deputy sheriff with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Certified School Resource Officer course preferred.
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Meet physical requirement of all sworn positions.
  • Work in a variant of temperatures and situations based upon training curriculum and mission.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • If a current CCSO employee, then no disciplinary actions within the last 12 months and completion of current position time commitment requirement.

  • Demonstrates polite, helpful, and courteous behavior, respecting cultural differences, when interacting with the public and colleagues.
  • Responds to supervision, guidance, and direction in a positive, receptive manner.
  • Must be appropriately dressed and groomed.
  • Reports to work promptly and properly prepared, notifying supervisor of intended absences.
  • Acts in a professional manner, following established protocols and procedures.

An oral board with job-related questions and/or scenarios will be administered on a date specifically set with all potential candidates notified at least three days in advance of the specified date. The oral board passing score will be 80% or higher. All candidates/employees will compete against one another for one position and the final selection to fill this slot will be made by the Sheriff. The Sheriff reserves the right to make selections from internal or external sources.
