COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER ACADEMY – COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

PAY GRADE: 204
STARTING PAY: $20.06/hour; $41,724.80 annualized
JOB TYPE: Full-time, 12-hour rotating shifts as assigned, weekends, and holidays required

REPORTS TO: Communications Director
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: CCSO is looking for strong candidates with an excellent work history who aspire to become Communications Officers with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. Communications Officers receive emergency and non-emergency phone calls, providing information and assistance, dispatching law enforcement, EMS, and fire personnel when necessary. As a Communications Officer you receive full-time CCSO benefits which include medical/dental/vision/life insurance, Florida Retirement System, paid time off, and access to CCSO gym facilities.
*THIS IS FOR ENROLLMENT IN THE COMMUNICATION OFFICER ACADEMY BEGINNING APRIL 6, 2026*
ESSENTIAL EXPECTATIONS:
- To pass a Criticall assessment test to qualify for the Communications Officer Academy.
- To complete a Call Center Questionnaire and Call Center Observation prior to the start of the academy.
- To complete the Communications Officer Academy program, including:
- Public Safety Telecommunications Program
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
- Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD)
- Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC) certification
- To pass the State of Florida 911 Safety Tele-communicator Certification Exam.
- Proficiency in keyboarding is equivalent to 32 wpm.
- Able to sit and speak for long periods of time.
- All CCSO employees are considered ‘essential emergency workers’ and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations, including but not limited to, in-County and out-of-County deployments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age at the start of the academy.
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
- Must have a valid Class E Florida Driver’s License.
- Must have a High School diploma or GED.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Must not have used, tried, tasted, experimented or possessed any illegal controlled substances in the last 12 months OR Schedule I or II substance within the last five years at the time of the application.
SELECTION PROCESS INCLUDES:
- On-line application
- Criticall assessment test
- Call Center Questionnaire
- Call Center Observation (2 hour minimum)
- Oral Board Review interview
- Background Investigation and Employment Checks
- Truth Verification Exam (CVSA)
- Medical exam and drug screen
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Demonstrates polite, helpful and courteous behavior, respecting cultural differences, when interacting with the public and colleagues.
- Responds to supervision, guidance and direction in a positive, receptive manner.
- Must be appropriately dressed and groomed.
- Reports to work promptly and properly prepared.
- Acts in a professional manner, following established protocols and procedures.
