DEPUTY SHERIFF
Citrus County Sheriff's Office

STARTING PAY RATE:       $25.50/hour

JOB TYPE:       Full-time position working 12-hour rotating shifts, includes nights, weekends and holidays.

JOB LOCATION:     Citrus County, FL

REPORTS TO:       Shift Commander

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: Deputy Sheriffs adopt a community policing philosophy that focuses on enforcing the law and serving the Citrus County community by developing relationships and partnerships with businesses and the citizens of Citrus County.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes public safety in assigned patrol area.
  • Responds to calls in a timely manner.
  • Develops relationships with community organizations, business, and individual citizens.
  • Acts as liaison between agency and community including civil and domestic disturbances
  • Conducts traffic enforcement.
  • Investigates traffic crashes and directs traffic around crashes, congested areas, and hazards.
  • Pursues vehicles safely.
  • Conducts felony stops.
  • Checks dwellings, other buildings, grounds and personal property to ensure their security.
  • Identifies elements of DUIs and properly administers field sobriety tests.
  • Retrieves suspect/vehicle/dispatch/service call information from the computer.
  • Utilizes all available resources to develop leads, analyze evidence, and determine if an investigation is warranted.
  • Apprehends suspect(s) using the appropriate level of force.
  • Collects latent fingerprints, photographs, and crime scene evidence.
  • Interviews persons in a professional manner.
  • Testifies at trials, hearings, grand juries, and depositions.
  • Prepares clear, concise reports or affidavits.
  • Identifies and monitors known criminal offenders/gang members.
  • Identifies, packages, seals and labels collected evidence and impounds vehicles.
  • Completes all assignments to specifications.
  • All CCSO employees are considered ‘essential emergency workers’ and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations, including but not limited to, in-County and out-of-County deployments.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  •  High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification of competency.
  •  Completion of a certified Florida Academy program or Officer Training equivalency program.
  •  Passing score on the State Office Certification Examination.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates appropriate officer safety techniques. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Excellent problem solving and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to use a 2-way radio.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow procedural and policy manuals.
  • Ability to achieve and contribute to organizational goals.
  • Ability to subdue and control persons using the appropriate level of force.
  • Knowledge of geographical jurisdiction.
  • Strong working knowledge of computer software programs and Microsoft Office.
  • Keyboarding skills.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
  • Good moral character.

TRAVEL:

  • Travel for county-wide coverage required.
  • An assigned vehicle will be issued by the Agency.
  • Usage fee for out-of-county residents.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • An element of personal danger.
  • High levels of physical, emotional and mental stress.
  • All weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Requires long periods of sitting, standing, walking, speaking, reaching, twisting, and turning daily.
  • Near and far vision.
  • Hearing acuity.
  • Deputy candidates required to successfully pass the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) shown below:

       Physical Abilities Test (PAT):

       All sworn members will be required to complete the PAT, which is approximately one-half mile in length and consists of 16 obstacles/stations. To complete the course, the member will:

  1. Begin the course seated in a vehicle with the seat belt on and both hands on the steering wheel. When instructed, the member will exit the vehicle, removing a training rifle from the vehicle. While using the vehicle as cover, the member will: simulate charging or “racking” the weapon, pulling the trigger, and returning the rifle to the vehicle with the safety “on.” (Tests agility.)
  2. Sprint 40 yards. (Tests quickness/speed)
  3. Climb over a wall approximately four feet in height. (Tests agility).
  4. Run a serpentine, which will consist of 10 poles placed approximately three yards apart (Tests agility).
  5. Jump over three hurdles of various heights (12”, 18”, and 24”) spaced several yards apart without knocking the hurdle off its stand (Tests agility).
  6. Crawl under three markers placed approximately 27 inches from the ground and eight feet long without knocking the marker off its stand (Tests agility).
  7. Jump over a shallow ditch approximately three feet in length (Tests agility).
  8. Proceed through a large concrete pipe approximately four to five feet high and six feet long (Tests agility).
  9. Cross a balance beam consisting of three 10 foot logs, for a total of 30 feet. In length. The member must touch the red mark (or beyond) with at least one foot (Tests agility).
  10. Climb a ladder approximately two stories high (15 feet) and touch a bell at the top. When climbing down, the member must touch the next-to-last rung (marked with red) with at least one foot (Tests agility).
  11. Climb a flight of stairs to a simulated one-story landing. When climbing down, the member must touch the next-to-last rung (marked with red) with at least one foot (Tests agility and stamina).
  12. Climb a six-foot wall. (Tests upper body, leg strength, and agility.
  13. Proceed through a door with a training weapon drawn, properly identify a suspect, and then holster the weapon. A description of the suspects will be provided at the beginning of the course (Tests memory, sight, hearing, and gross motor skills).
  14. Climb through a window opening with training weapon drawn then holster -or- approach the window with the weapon drawn, look through the window, then holster and proceed through the window (Tests agility).
  15. Run to the red-colored post, then drag or pull a sled weighing approximately 150 pounds a distance of seventy feet (Tests stamina and endurance).
  16. Return to the vehicle and “dry-fire” a training handgun six times with each hand. The member must reach the red-colored post prior to drawing training weapon for “dry-fire” (Tests fine motor skills).
  17. Indicate that the assignment has been completed over the radio microphone (Tests fine motor skills, memory, and logic).
    Failure to properly identify the correct suspect or failure to successfully complete any individual segment of the course disqualifies the attempt. Failure of an individual segment may be repeated as long as the overall time does not exceed 8:30:00. Example - falling off the balance beam will require repeating that entire segment from the beginning. Once a member begins the PAT, if they are unable to complete the course for any reason it will be considered a failure.

    
Deputy applicants are strongly encouraged to begin fitness training as soon as the application is complete in order to meet these rigorous fitness requirements.

  • Uses appropriate force required for the situation as specified within the use of force continuum.
