Pay: $109,303.04 annually
General Description: The General Counsel manages legal services to the Sheriff’s Office to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by the law, Provides guidance, consultation, and advises members in legal matters which affect the Sheriff’s Office. The General Counsel performs administrative and legal duties and tasks specific to the position.
Essential Functions:
- Provides expert legal advice and participates in command level planning & special projects.
- Provides legal research, opinions, and advises Sheriff and Staff on issues affecting the Agency including cases, rulings, updated legislative, and legal matters.
- Administrates forfeiture procedures and processes.
- Provides representation for Career Service appeals, disciplinary actions, court proceedings, and officer involved shootings/serious incidents.
- Reviews, researches, and aids in the preparation of public records requests, internal affairs processes, arrest orders/warrants, and search warrants.
- Reviews current, as well as proposed, Agency general orders/policies, contracts and legal documents.
- Presents legal training on various aspects of law enforcement procedures.
- All Citrus County Sheriff's Office employees are considered 'essential workers' and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations, including but not limited to, in-County and out-of-County deployments.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent oral, written communication skills, and public speaking ability.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism and diplomacy.
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write the most complex documents.
- Problem solving skills and ability to provide analysis of the law, and recommend practical solutions to problems within legal guidelines.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- A Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education required.
- Member of the Florida Bar Association in good standing required.
- Bachelor's Degree in pre-law, political science, criminal justice or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of five years law experience as an attorney for law enforcement preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Occasionally lifting to 30 lbs.
- Requires sitting for long periods of time, speaking, walking, stooping, reaching, and writing.
- Repetitive hand movements.
- Near and far vision.
- Hearing acuity.
- Be able to speak clearly so listeners can understand.
Requirements:
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
- Maintain certification as an attorney and legal standing with the Florida Bar Association.
- Maintain knowledge of criminal law additions and revisions.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
